[Transcribed and translated - Chatgpt]
In the records of Stellenbosch, a petition was received from Field Sergeant Pieter du Toit Frantz, who requested the grant of a small piece of land measuring two morgen in the districts of Stellenbosch and Tulbagh. He sought formal inspection and transfer of this land into his possession.

At the same time, another matter was brought before the authorities concerning a young sailor named Nicolaas Justinus KEHR. Kehr had arrived at the Cape from the Netherlands aboard the ship Castor as a common seaman. A request was made on his behalf for release from the service of the Dutch East India Company, together with the grant of local citizenship.

This request was strongly supported by Johannes Casper Loos, the town firemaster of Stellenbosch. Loos had personally arranged for the young man to travel from his birthplace of Emsbach to the Cape, with the intention of adopting him as his own child. His motive was both compassionate and practical: by taking the boy into his household, Loos hoped to relieve KEHR’s impoverished parents, his father’s sister, in Emsbach of the heavy burden of supporting their son.

Moved by this appeal, the authorities agreed to Loos’s request. Out of special consideration, they granted Kehr his discharge from Company service, along with the rights of local burghership. Furthermore, the Company would bear the expense of his extraction from service and the costs of his passage and transport from the Netherlands.

History of the Nijenborg

The Nijenborg was overpowered by mutineers after a month on her second voyage (May 8, 1763) and forced to sail to Brazil. They arrived there on August 2. Sixty-four mutineers disembarked with some of the cargo of money and gold. The rest arrived in French Guiana a month later. The mutineers intended to live inconspicuously with the loot, but their wasteful behavior made them very conspicuous in both Brazil and Guiana.

The Nijenborg arrived in Paramaribo a year later. There, most of the crew was replaced. The Nijenborg then continued her voyage via the Cape to Batavia, arriving there on August 30, 1765. The Nijenburg was back in the Netherlands on October 20, 1766.

Her third voyage from Texel to Batavia and back did not end well. After leaving Batavia on 13-1-1769 for the Cape, the Nijeburg went missing in the Indian Ocean.
