John Quail was born in Liverpool, Merseyside, England on 12 April 1838 to James and Anne (Née STABLEFORD). John was a qualified teacher. He arrived in South Africa in 1869 and settled in Grahamstown, Cape Colony. The surname means “nervous person” John X Eliza Jane MARSHALL (1844-1924) in 1866. She was the daughter of British Settlers EH MARSHALL and AM PURCELL.
