Stamvader and Pioneer, Pieter Van Der Westhuijsen
by Cornel Viljoen.
Recent records from the Den Haag Archives are shedding light and highlighting new information about our original pioneers at the Cape of Good Hope. From his vrijbrief issued by Jan Van Riebeeck on 18 January 1662. See attached copy of his vrijbrief.
Pieter Van Der Westhuijsen arrived on the ship West Friesland, that undertook a gruelling journey of 184 days (6 months) to arrive at Table Bay on the 18th of January 1662. The ship departed Vlie on the 18th of July 1661. The ship was however already at Saldanha Bay between 6 December 1661 until 10 January 1662. The exact reason for this holdup is not known but could be anything from sick seafarers to wild winds at the Cape.
On the same day that the ship docked in Table Bay, Pieter received his vrijbrief on request from the Commander Jan Van Riebeeck. Pieter was granted his vrijburger status notwithstanding still being under contract with the VOC for another 5 years. His contact was altered, and he was going to be relieved from his contractual duties to the VOC if he agreed to work as a servant to Thielman Hindricx from Utrecht from the same period, being 5 years, or any other existing vrijburger that might require his services. Pieter agreed to the new conditions, and he received his vrijbrief on 18 January 1662 and started his employed at Thielman Hindricx. Thielan Hendricks was working as an agriculturist on the Jan Van Riebeeck’s farm Uijtwijck and had already been provided with one Dutch servant, Jan Verhagen from Arendonck. The farm Uijtwijck was located near the present day Green Point area as depicted in the map location “R”. The other farm Bosheuwel (located at marker “W”) was farmed by Barent Waenders from Barick.
Pieter married Maria Hendricksz Winkelhausen on 18 November 1673. She was the widow of Hendrik Barendse from Burgersteinfort. The couple had 4 sons and 4 daughters. After her death, he married Eva Gerrits Ligtehard, widow of Jan Mos.
