RUST Jan Hendrik

Jan Hendrik RUST, koster of the Swartland Church, farmer of Waterschilpadskuil, Swartland, was born circa January 1749 and baptized 26 January 1749 in Scherpenzeel, Gelderland, the son of Albert Gerritsz Rust and Anna Geertruij Rosse who were married at Scherpenzeel 2 December 1742. He died between March and June 1794, (based on filing date of will)

He married 1 October 1775 at Swartland Hilletje Geertruida Mostert who was baptized 29 June 1755 at Swartland, the daughter of Jan Mostert and Anna van der Westhuizen farmers at Twee Kuijlen, Swartland. She died after January 1810.

Jan Hendrik Rust made two voyages as an employee of the VOC, first on 31 Dec 1771 on the Groenendaal to the Cape and back to the Netherlands. On 14 Dec 1773 he sailed again as a Jongmatroos on the Botland and left the ship at the Cape, where he became a member of the Swartland congregation in December 1773.

In 1784 he memorialized the Council of Justice thus:

He was Jan Rust, originally from Scherpenzeel, now ex-koster of the Swartland Church. He had been a 'young sailor' (this was a grade) in the service of the Company, and in 1775 he was discharged, in order, at the request of the Swartland Congregation, to enter on the duties of Koster, on condition that if he could no longer perform the same, he would ask for burger papers. Having now been relieved of those duties, he asks for burger rights. (Cape Archives: Requesten, 1784, no. 15)

When he made his will on the 1st March 1794 he was described as being sick in body, and he presumably died not long afterwards, for the will was filed 2nd July of the same year. In this will he stated that his parents were no longer living.
