Biography of Jurrien Redeijn of Hamburg [Chatgpt.com]

In the year 1707, Jurrien Redeijn, a young man from Hamburg, entered the service of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). He signed on as an adelborst, or midshipman - a junior officer in training - aboard the Company ship Westhoven, sailing under the authority of the Zeeland Chamber. This position marked him not as an ordinary sailor, but as someone on the path toward command responsibilities within the VOC’s vast fleet.

Redeijn’s wages were fixed at ten guilders per month, and like all Company servants, his account was carefully recorded in the ship’s ledger. Alongside his earnings were the inevitable deductions: a compulsory contribution of brandy “for the coffin,” a customary VOC provision for funerary expenses at sea, and several purchases of cloth from fellow crew members. These small entries, listed against his name, show the daily realities of a life at sea, where the Company regulated both pay and provisions.

During the voyage to the East Indies, the records note that Redeijn spent one day in the hospital at the Cape of Good Hope, a brief but telling reminder of the hardships faced by those on the long journey eastward. Redeijn did not board the ship again but stayed on in the Cape of Good Hope.

By the end of this contract, Redeijn’s total earnings amounted to 186 guilders and 18 stuivers. Of this sum, 150 guilders had already been advanced to him, leaving a balance of 36 guilders and 18 stuivers still due. On 9 September 1709, more than two years after his departure, he signed a receipt acknowledging that he had received his final settlement in full.

The Rank of Adelborst

The title of adelborst carried weight within the VOC. Derived from naval tradition, the rank was equivalent to midshipman in English service: a young officer candidate, often from a respectable or educated background, who was being trained in seamanship, navigation, and leadership. Unlike common sailors, an adelborst was expected to learn the skills required to command men and manage a ship. The rank stood above ordinary seamen but below commissioned officers such as lieutenant or skipper.

For the VOC, adelborsten formed the pipeline from which its future officers were drawn. Advancement was not automatic: success depended on competence, connections, and survival. Many died on their first voyage, as disease, shipwreck, or combat claimed a heavy toll. But those who endured could rise through the ranks to become lieutenants, skippers, or even captains, positions of both responsibility and prestige within the Company.

The Ship Westhoven

Westhoven was built in 1698 for the Zeeland Chamber of the VOC, at the VOC shipyard in Middelburg. vocsite.nl
The ship was named after the buitenplaats (estate) “Westhove” on Walcheren (Zeeland). vocsite.nl
It had a length of 145 Dutch feet, and a cargo capacity of about 776 tons. The crew complement typically ranged from 200 to 251 men. vocsite.nl
Westhoven made its first voyage from Wielingen to Batavia departing 2 February 1699 and arriving 8 September 1699, via the Cape of Good Hope. vocsite.nl
The ship was in service with the VOC from its first voyage in 1699 until it was laid up (afgelegd) at Batavia on 24 October 1724. vocsite.nl

Details of voyage 2032.3 from Vlissingen to Ceylon

Type of ship; Built; 1698; Tonnage; 776; Yard; Zeeland; Chamber; Zeeland
Date of departure; 05-06-1707
Place of departure; Vlissingen
Arrival at Cape; 07-11-1707

The voyage identified as DAS 2032.3, undertaken by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) ship Westhoven, is a notable example of 17th-century maritime expeditions. Departing from Vlissingen on 5 June 1707, the ship was captained by Krijn Andriesz. The Westhoven was a substantial vessel, built in 1698 with a tonnage of 776, constructed in Zeeland, and registered under the Zeeland Chamber of the VOC. The ship's journey included a stop at the Cape of Good Hope on 7 November

1707.

The ship's final destination was Ceylon (modern-day Sri Lanka), a key colony in the VOC's Asian network. While the exact arrival date in Ceylon is not specified in the available records, the Cape stopover suggests a typical route involving the Cape as a refueling and resupply point before continuing to Asia.

He worked as a stable boy in 1708, served as a VOC soldier in 1709, and was employed as a farmhand from 1709 to 1714. In 1719, he leased land on the Lourens River in Hottentots Holland (Stellenbosch), later known as the farm "Güstrow" in Hottentots Hollands Kloof. His widow sought a grant for the farm in 1743 due to financial hardship and the responsibility of supporting eight children.
