KEMPEN Willem

was born 27th May 1765 in Norf, Rheinland, Germany. Willem sailed to the Cape of Good Hope from the Island of Texel in the Netherlands aboard the Dutch East India Company ship "Hoornwegh" under the command of Captain Simon Vaartjes. The "Hoornwegh" departed Texel on 18 January 1790 and arrived at the Cape on 29 April 1790. Willem was one of 16 persons to disembark. Willem was employed as a soldier by the Dutch East India Company until December 1793.

By 1798 he was teaching at Graaff-Reinet. On 19 March 1809 he married Anna Catharina NEL in Graaff Reinet. They had six children. Willem died on 7 November 1838 at Kafferskraal, Nieuweveld, South Africa.

Anna Catharina Nel was born 11 April 1790, she was the daughter of Stephanus Nel and Anna Margaretha Janse van Rensburg. Anna died on 10 July 1847.
