FOUSTMAN/FAUSTMAN George Ernest

George Ernest FOUSTMAN-FAUSTMAN from Berlin.

Berlin the capital and royal residence the heart of the powerful Kingdom of Prussia, with King Frederick the Great ruling during this era, situated in the Margraviate of Brandenburg, and located in the fertile Spree River valley, surrounded by forests and lakes, known for its Baroque buildings and avenues like Unter den Linden. Berlin was already a significant European capital, growing rapidly in size, influence, and grandeur, laying the groundwork for its later role as the capital of a unified Germany. (AI quote).

The Foustman/Faustman story at the Cape begins with George Ernest Foustman, a young man from Berlin who entered the service of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) on 20 May 1770. He sailed on the Landskroon, a sturdy Amsterdam-built ship carrying more than 270 crewmen. After a demanding ocean crossing, the vessel called at the Cape of Good Hope on 23 September 1770, where George remained to fulfil his duties as a VOC soldier.

By 1776, George had completed the years required to earn burgher status. Once accepted into the Cape community, he shifted his occupation from soldiering to the skilled trade of wigmaking, a profession much in demand during the late 18th century. By 1786 he had risen to the respected post of court messenger (Bode van de Hof) in Stellenbosch. His life at the Cape spanned more than two decades, ending with his death on 26 March 1792.

George married twice. His first wife, Johanna Magdalena Tichy, came from an established Cape family. Born and baptised in 1756, she was the daughter of Wenzel (Martin) Tiesij/Tichij/Tichy and Levina Vredenburgh. George and Johanna married on 16 June 1776, but their marriage was short-lived; Johanna died in 1777, scarcely a year later.
