JACOBS BAY:
Established a few decades ago, Jacobsbaai is between Vredenburg and Saldanha Bay. Jacobsbaai was originally founded as a small town on the farmland registered as; '109 Jacobsbaai'. The name is said to have evolved from the Frenchman Jacques Titius. He was a Colonial Trader in the West Coast. Another explanation for the name is that the English king entrusted the piece of land to a local known as ‘Jacob.’ During the early 1800's a company called “ Stefan Bros” conducted trade along the West Coast and when this local farmer became indebted to them they took over his Farm on a 99 year lease holding basis as a way to pay off his debts.
HOPEFIELD:
The town was started in 1844 on the farm Lange Kuil situated along the banks of Zoutrivier. It’s original name was Zoute Rivier.In May 1853 after a small village had grown up on the farm Lange Kuil permission was granted in the Government Gazette for a town to be established there. It was named Hopefield in honour of Secretary of the Government and Receiver of Revenue at the time. Hidden away in the Swartland half way between Malmesbury and Vredenberg. The town has one main feature and that is the local Dutch Reformed Church with its parish which was established in 1851.
